OSR review of population projections and estimates

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) is undertaking a review of the population projections and population estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Our review will consider to what extent the methods and approaches are as good as they can be, and to what extent the projections developed were appropriate for their intended purpose, in line with the principles set out in the  Code of Practice for Statistics.

It is not within our remit to regulate operational decisions made by government or local authorities, nor to form a judgement on decisions about government policy. The scope of our review will be formed around the principles within the Code and will include ensuring that the official statistics are used appropriately, and that they can bear the weight put on them where they are used in decision making.

As part of our review, we will be engaging with the Office for National Statistics and the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government as well as speaking with other parties we have identified as being key stakeholders in this matter. If you are interested in speaking to us as part of this review, please email regulation@statistics.gov.uk

We aim to publish our findings in Spring 2021.
