Dear John,

Accreditation status of Roads Policing statistics

Thank you for your letter on 22 October 2026 requesting the cancellation of accreditation for the Roads Policing statistics published by the Home Office.

Given the limitations in the underlying data, which you have identified following closer work with police forces, I agree to your request to cancel the accreditation of the Roads Policing statistics from 6 December 2024. This date is when the series started being published as a standalone output (the year ending March 2023 release, published in December 2024). I note your intention to label these as official statistics in development while you continue to assess the quality of the underlying data. We have published guidance on producing Official Statistics in Development to support producers in communicating changes clearly and transparently.

I welcome the work being undertaken to address the identified issues and strengthen assurance of the underlying data. I also appreciate you publishing clear limitations and caveats relating to these statistics where relevant.

My team will be happy to discuss the most appropriate timing for any future reviews of these statistics once development work has progressed and you are assured that the outputs comply fully with the Code of Practice for Statistics.

Yours sincerely,

Ed Humpherson
Director General for OSR
