Anna Price to Geoff Ogden: Compliance review of Wales National Travel Survey
Dear Geoff
Compliance review of Wales National Travel Survey
We have completed a compliance review of Wales National Travel Survey (WNTS): six-month results produced by Transport for Wales (TfW) against the standards of the Code of Practice for Statistics (the Code). These statistics are currently published as official statistics in development. Our review considered how the statistics have been developed and whether there are areas for improvement.
Based on our findings, we conclude that the statistics are a strong set of official statistics in development. Key strengths include TfW’s commitment to user engagement and the clear, well-structured and impartial way the statistics are presented. We have made four recommendations to inform the development of the statistics, including considering how uncertainty is communicated; publishing additional information with the next report (for example, on the quality management approach) and reviewing the reports and website to make them more concise and accessible.
We expect TfW to provide a public update on its progress in relation to our recommendations before the publication of its first WNTS annual report (provisionally pre-announced for November 2026).
I am grateful for the positive engagement from you and your team – in particular, for acting promptly on feedback raised by my team during the review.
I am copying this letter to Sam Willson, David Swarts, Annie Rose Pickup and Paul Chase from TfW’s Geospatial and Strategic Transport Analysis Unit.
Yours sincerely
Dr Anna Price
