Dear Ed,

Request for assessment of Admin Based Population Estimates for England and Wales

We are continuously improving statistics on population to reflect changes in society and technology and better meet user needs.

We have taken significant steps towards achieving this goal and have been talking to your team in the Office for Statistics Regulation about reviewing these statistics. We have published a suite of evidence demonstrating the capability of the Dynamic Population Model – which is an evolution of the current mid-year estimate methodology that can draw strength from a range of administrative data sources.

We recently published Admin Based Population Estimates for local authorities in England and Wales, mid-2021 to mid-2023 as official statistics in development.

In accordance with Section 12(1) of the Statistics and Registration Act 2007, I would be grateful if the Office for Statistics Regulation could assess official statistics on Admin Based Population Estimates for England and Wales against the Code of Practice for Statistics for accredited official statistics.

I am copying this request to Rachel Skentelbery, Deputy Head of Profession for Statistics at ONS.

Best regards,

Professor Sir Ian Diamond
