Overview and timeline
In July 2024, we initiated a systemic review of economic statistics produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). As part of this review, we published an interim report in April 2025, and a final report in November 2025.
In response both to our interim report and to the Devereux Review, published in June 2025, ONS published a Plan for Economic Statistics and Survey Improvement and Enhancement Plan for Economic Statistics. These plans set out ONS’s intention and planned steps to restore quality and confidence in its economic statistics.
In our review of its economic statistics, we requested that ONS publish quarterly updates detailing its progress. ONS published its first quarterly update in December 2025, which we responded to in January 2026. Its second quarterly update, published in April 2026, set out further progress against our recommendations.
This current report responds to ONS’s second quarterly update and sets out what ONS now needs to do to ensure that the recommendations are met in full.
