Dear Stephanie,
Consultation on proposed changes to Welsh Government statistical outputs
Thank you for your letter regarding your forthcoming consultation on the Welsh Government’s portfolio of statistics.
We recognise the significant pressures currently facing statistical producers and the need to ensure that analytical work remains sustainable, efficient and effective. Your approach of actively seeking users’ views on proposed changes to your statistical outputs reflects a constructive response to these pressures. It is encouraging to hear your plans to put users at the centre of decision making, making responsible and impartial choices and being open and accountable for the outcomes.
It is positive to hear how you will prioritise maintaining public value and trust in the statistics. The recently refreshed Code of Practice for Statistics has strengthened the expectations around involving users and should help to support and guide you, particularly in considering how to engage in meaningful and constructive ways – through the consultation itself and beyond – and actively reaching out, listening and responding to a varied user base.
I would be happy to discuss any aspect of your plans further, and my team will continue to work with you as you embark on this period of change.
Yours sincerely,
Ed Humpherson
Director General for OSR
