Introduction

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) is the independent regulatory arm of the UK Statistics Authority (known as the Authority). We are independent from government ministers and separate from producers of statistics. To ensure independence from ONS (which also sits under the UKSA umbrella), the Director General for Regulation has no reporting line to the National Statistician, reporting instead directly to the Chair of the UK Statistics Authority.

This report draws together our casework from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 (2023/24). It focuses on the issues and themes in the 231 pieces of casework we investigated during this time. The annual casework report is aimed at anyone with an interest in the work of OSR or how official statistics are used.

This report is supported by two annexes:

  • Annex A – “Casework Summary April 2023 to March 2024” provides management information related to our casework. We have updated our historical management information from 2019 onwards to include data from the 2023/24 casework year. We have also included our underpinning assumptions and interpretation of the data.
  • Annex B – “Statement of voluntary compliance” is a statement of our compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics. In line with our expectations for voluntary application of the Code for any producer of data, statistics and analysis which are not official statistics, we have compared our processes, methods and outputs against the recognised standards that the Code requires of official statistics to demonstrate our commitment to trustworthiness, quality and public value.
