Dear Ed,

Alternative release time for CPIH-consistent inflation rate estimates for UK household groups

I am writing to formally request an alternative to the 9:30am release time relating to the release of CPIH-consistent inflation rate estimates for UK household groups.

I am grateful for the discussion and steer you provided which enabled us to bring forward the release time from 9:30am to 7:00am on 17 August 2022.

We agreed that by aligning our release time with the main Consumer price inflation release at 7:00am it would enable us to provide coherence between publications, increasing public understanding and providing greater clarity and insight on the impact of cost of living and inflation on households. It would also increase the visibility of this release with users, which is less well known than the main Consumer price inflation release, ensuring we are being fully transparent about the latest available data.

Had we gone ahead with the original release time of 9:30am, we were concerned that we would only be able to present a partial story at 7:00am, which may have led to misinterpretation by users.

With this in mind, I would be grateful for confirmation that you are content to grant an alternative release time of 7:00am for future releases.

I am copying this request to Michael Keoghan, Deputy National Statistician & Director General for the Economic, Social and Environmental Statistics Group (ESEG) at ONS.

Yours sincerely,

Rachel Skentelbery
Deputy Head of Profession for Statistics, ONS
