Each of the four UK administrations produces an index of multiple deprivation (IMD) – a ranking of small areas from the most to the least deprived, based on a range of statistical data about domains – such as income, employment, health, housing, education, access to services, and crime. However, there is no corresponding IMD covering the UK as a whole, so areas in different countries of the UK cannot be compared. This Brief reports the UK Statistics Authority’s views about the demand for, and feasibility of producing, a UK-wide index of multiple deprivation.
