Examples of OS and MI

Official statistics about crime are published based on multiple sources including:

Police data about crimes are records created on a crime management system if an incident is confirmed as a crime. An incident is defined as any concern reported to the police. This information is used to keep a record of the investigation.

Police recorded crime data are published by police forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on the police.uk website. They are also published through data.police.uk as open data. Police Scotland clearly signposts that their data are management information and not official statistics.

Exceptionally, the Police Service for Northern Ireland is an official statistics producer, having been included in the Order for Official Statistics 2009 (NI). Statisticians from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are seconded to the Police Service of Northern Ireland and are responsible for ensuring that the statistics they produce comply with the Code of Practice. You can find information about the Police Service for Northern Ireland’s  approach to release of statistics in line with the Code on their website.

Ofsted publishes inspections of state-funded schools and outcomes figures. It releases monthly management information about state-funded school inspections and outcomes on gov.uk. Inspections are only included if:

  • the inspection has been completed
  • the report of the inspection has been published on the Ofsted reports website

The dataset is designed to provide an up-to-date picture of the most recent inspection of each school at local authority and regional level.

Ofsted publishes official statistics on the outcomes of state-funded school inspections that have been completed within the most recent reporting period. The purpose of these official statistics is to disseminate the data on school standards collected through Ofsted’s role as an inspectorate. They provide information about how the judgements of schools have changed over time. They vary across different phases of education and different parts of the country.

The release summarises the most recent inspection outcomes of all open schools as at the end of the reporting period. If an open school has not yet been inspected, the inspection outcome of its predecessor school is included to give a more comprehensive view of the sector. The release covers all state-funded schools in England.

The MI does not normally benefit from accompanying commentary, although periodically data commentaries are produced to comment on areas of likely public interest. Such commentaries were added in response to user feedback during Ofsted’s review of statistics publications in early 2022.
